Every once in a while a TV series comes along that’s so good and so thought-provoking, you binge watch the whole season and then want to go back and watch it all over again.
Interestingly enough, many of those shows seem to come from HBO, whose latest offering is the groundbreaking True Detective.
My son called me from New York immediately after finishing the first episode to make sure I didn’t miss it when it started three hours later in California. I was hooked from the beginning, and we spent the season emailing our favorite quotes – “People incapable of guilt usually do have a good time” – back and forth to each other.
True Detective stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, both of whom deserve Emmy Awards for their intense and riveting performances. The show follows the lives of these two detectives over their 17-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana, and it keeps you guessing until the very end. It’s gritty, dark and, oh, so smart.
And, talk about smart, True Detective Season 1 will be available at Best Buy on June 10 – right in time for Father’s Day on June 15. Really, which do you think dads would prefer – another tie or the entire season of a modern classic like True Detective?
Best Buy has an extensive selection of HBO hit series, including Game of Thrones, Eastbound and Down and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and they’ll be on sale from June 8 to June 14 both in stores and online. They make great gifts because 1) you know your Dad will love them, and 2) you get to watch with him, winning you points for spending quality time together.
I’m guessing this will be my son’s gift to my husband – and that he’ll be subtly memorizing the enclosed code that also lets you download the show to the device of your choice.
